See how our landscaping team created a new sensory garden for the children at St Swithurns Primary School in Kennington, Oxford.
One of our most rewarding projects in 2020 was this 4-week landscaping job at a local primary school in Kennington, near Oxford. St Swithun’s Primary School approached us to install a “sensory garden” in the school grounds.
The main purpose of the garden was to provide a stimulating space that the children could enjoy during playtime. The school’s preferred design featured a wavy, circular path around the edge of a lawn, dissected by a series of small stepping stones. We suggested the appropriate pavestones for each section, as well as complimentary features such as setts and decorative flint.
Our first task was to fully excavate the overgrown grass within the school grounds. To form the main path, we laid 25 square metres of Brett Omega Autumn Gold block paving lined with Coastal Mix Sandstone paving and setts. We also put down a series of stepping stones to interrupt the path, including a zig-zagging layout of log stepping stones surrounded by decorative flint shingle.
The lawn had to be pristine, so the obvious product pick was the ever-popular Rolawn turf. We laid 140 square metres of turf in total, plus a sequence of 18 Bradstone round stepping stones in Brown Blend.
The end result is a quirky, stimulating garden area that the children of St Swithun’s will hopefully enjoy for decades to come!
